Council supplementary election

Preparations are well underway for conduct of the supplementary election for two area councilors for Coober Pedy council. The election is principally conducted by the Electoral Commission of SA who undertakes the legislative process of the election and subsequent count of votes. Council is required to provide on ground assistance with administrative matters.
 
Below is the time frame for key activities in the process.
 
Ms Jayde Grava and Judy Williams have been appointed as Electoral Officers.  The council Liaison Officer is still to be appointed and likely to be the “new” acting CEO.

Who can nominate

You are eligible to nominate if:

  • You are an Australian citizen or have held office as a member of a council at any time between 5 May 1997 and 1 January 2000

and as at roll close

  • Are an elector for the council area or
  • Are the designated person of a body corporate or a group either of which has its name on the council's voters roll (you must be an officer of the body corporate or a member of the group or an officer of a body corporate that is a member of the group) or
  • Your name has been omitted in error from the council's voters roll or you are the designated person of a body corporate or a group which has had its name omitted in error from the council's voters roll and you would otherwise be eligible for nomination.

A body corporate or group can only nominate the designated person to stand as a candidate for an election.

Who cannot nominate

You cannot nominate if you:

  • Are a member of an Australian Parliament (including any State or Territory Parliament)
  • Are an undischarged bankrupt or benefiting from law for the relief of insolvent debtors
  • Are an employee of the council
  • Are disqualified from election by court order under the Local Government Act 1999 
  • Have been sentenced to imprisonment and are, or could become, liable to serve the sentence or the remainder of the sentence
  • Nominate for more than one position on a council (LGEA section 19)
  • Nominate for election to more than one council; in the event of multiple nominations, all nominations are void at the time of close of nominations

Voting in Council elections

Voting packs will be sent to enrolled voters between Monday 22 October - Friday 26 October 2018.

Voting packs contain:

  • A ballot paper for each election being contested in the council area for which you are entitled to vote
  • Candidate profile brochure
  • A ballot paper envelope
  • A reply paid envelope
  • A Postal Voting Guide

Most electors will receive one voting pack. However, people who have additional properties or entitlements for a different election may receive more than one voting pack.

Remember you can only vote once for each separate election.
