Power Outages

We do our best to minimise outages, but they can still happen at any time with circumstances beyond our control such as weather, wildlife, or vehicles contacting power poles, and can result in a power outage without warning.

Although we do our best to minimise the length of the electrical power outage, please be prepared to be without electricity during the time indicated in the notifications we sentdto you.

We greatly appreciate your support and thank you for your patience.

For any other questions related to your upcoming electrical power outage, please contact Council on 08 8672 4600.

If you have complex needs or are vulnerable when the power is out, being prepared for a power outage at any time is essential.

Here are a few recommendations to help minimise any inconvenience to you during an electric power outage:

  • If you rely on life support devices, consider the following:
    • Install an Uninterruptible Power Supply on the necessary life support equipment.
    • Obtain small portable oxygen tanks as back-ups.
    • Find alternate shelter at a location not affected by the electric power outage.
  • Water: If your water supply is provided from a pump, you will likely not be able to access the water during the electricical power outage. You may want to have bottled water available. If you use an electric pressure pump, make sure that all taps are turned off. This will prevent flooding if power is restored when you are not home.
  • Computers and other electronic equipment are sensitive to electric power outages. We recommend unplugging this equipment before the outage starts. Consider installing a surge protector on sensitive equipment.
  • Keep your cell phone battery charged. Cordless phones will not operate during an electric power outage.
  • Automatic garage doors require electricity. It is recommended you remove your vehicle before the electric power outage starts.
  • Security systems, clocks, irrigation timers and similar equipment will likely require resetting after the electric power outage is over and your power is restored.
  • Have a battery-powered flashlight with fresh batteries available.
  • Food safety: During any electricity power outage, keep the doors of your refrigerator and freezer closed to help keep food fresh. Avoid opening doors to check the contents. For more advice on food safety visit SA Health. If your freezer is not full, keep items close together—this helps the food stay cold longer. Keep ice packs.
  • Have a back up plan for any pets relying on power (such as tropical fish) to ensure their needs are met. Consider UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for fish tanks and similar equipment.
  • If your home has an electric hot water system and you keep using it, the water will simply go cold. If your system has a ‘boost’ button you can heat your water, once power is restored.
  • If you or someone you know relies on medical equipment, here are some extra tips to best prepare and manage your needs during an outage.
