Always check road conditions before heading into the park.  The road is a unformed dirt road subject to considerable variation and impacted by weather conditions, in particular rain.  At times the entire park or sections of the park will be closed or access will be recommended for 4WD vehicles only.  Road updates can be found here.

The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park is a 14,300 hectare park approximately 25km north of Coober Pedy.  The park has spectacular coloured hills, flat topped mesas and gibber covered plains (locally referred to as "moon plain").

The entire park is an Aboriginal Heritage site and is protected under both the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 and the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988.

Visiting the park at sunrise or sunset shows the spectacular changing colours of the landscape at their best.

Kanku–Breakaways Conservation Park is the traditional land of the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara people and is an important part of the Coober Pedy district. The Kanku has always protected us, the land, food, plants and animals. We will work together to keep it strong so that the Kanku can welcome people and provide a vibrant Coober Pedy community.
