STATE GOVERNMENT TASKFORCE
As you may be aware the State Government has decided to establish a high-level taskforce to deal with the complexities of Coober Pedy’s municipal and essential services. This decision was in response to a number of proposals put to the State Government by the Council in June.
The Council commends the State Government on this action.
The Council recently wrote to the Minister expressing the view that the terms of reference for the taskforce should be expanded to focus on the role the State Government wishes Coober Pedy to play in the future in terms of the Far North. As the town is the only urban centre of any size in the top half of the State, this is a critical question that needs answering. To do this, the taskforce needs a status report in terms of Coober Pedy’s economic, environmental, and social performance. Coober Pedy Together has already done some work in this regard.
The creation of the taskforce is a unique opportunity to cement a better-defined future for Coober Pedy. Obviously, this should be done in conjunction with Coober Pedy Together and the Council.
