Status of “Old Town Hall” Project
On 22 November Council approved a project with Sports and Function Centre (SFC) to repair the “Old Town Hall” (Lot 773) for usage of SFC covering multiple community-based activities and a second-hand shop. Terms of a Licence Agreement were agreed, and the CEO given authority to finalise the Agreement.
Key imperatives were to conduct a Radiation Report and Building Inspection, both of which have occurred and cleared the usage of the building subject to removal and dumping of asbestos by an accredited organisation. A suitable organisation was appointed, and plans put in place for the removal and disposal of asbestos to occur late this week and for a period of 3-4 days.
Yesterday a member of the community started to remove some items from the building, including a small amount of material that may have contained asbestos. This was ceased when it came to Council’s attention and today the rubbish was removed and disposed of in an authorised way.
Additionally, the previously unlocked door to the building has been padlocked and an asbestos warning sign is in place at the building. Further signs warning that the building contains asbestos have been ordered and will be placed around the building.
The project has been put on hold so that all required plans are put in place and managed well.
